Stocks closed up today after a slew of earnings results from the big banks topped expectations, and new weekly jobless claims showed a larger-than-anticipated improvement to a pandemic-era low.

Dow Jones finished +535 at 34,912

S&P 500 finished +74 at 4,438

NASDAQ finished +252 at 14,823

 

The 10 Year Treasury closed down 3 basis points yielding 1.51%

Oil prices closed up $0.94 ending at $81.38 a barrel.

Gold prices closed up $3.40   ending at $1,798 an ounce.

 

In the days’ stock news:

 

  • Bank of America closed up 4.5% after its third-quarter earnings and revenue exceeded analysts’ expectations. Bank of America benefited from record advisory and asset management fees.
  • UnitedHealth closed up more than 4% following a blowout earnings report. UnitedHealth posted an EPS of $4.52 in the third quarter, 11 cents above analysts’ estimate, according to Refinitiv. Its revenue also came in above expectations, while the company raised its full-year earnings forecast.
