U.S. stocks fell sharply today as heightened speculative trading by retail investors continued to worry the market.

 

Dow Jones finished -621 at 29,982

S&P 500 finished -73 at 3,714

NASDAQ finished -266 at 13,070

 

The 10 Year Treasury closed up 2 basis points yielding 1.08%

Oil prices closed down $0.11 ending at $52.23 a barrel.

Gold prices closed up $8.40 ending at $1,846 an ounce.

 

In the days’ stock news:

 

  • Shares of the drugmaker Johnson & Johnson closed down more than 3% after phase three trial data showed that the company’s Covid-19 vaccine was 72% effective in the U.S. but less effective in other regions, including South Africa.
  • Chevron closed down more than 4% after it missed analyst expectations on the top and bottom line during the fourth quarter.
