Stocks finished the day mixed, with the DOW and S&P both in positive territory, while the NASDAQ dropped. In economic news, there were 411,000 jobless claims last week, 8% more than expected.

S&P 500 +14 at 4,281

NASDAQ -9 at 14,360

 

The 10 Year Treasury closed up 5 basis points yielding 1.54%

Oil prices closed up $0.66 ending at $73.96 a barrel

Gold prices closed up $1 ending at $1,777 an ounce

 

Corporate news:

 

  • Shares of Virgin Galactic moved 39% higher after the FAA granted approval for the company to fly paying customers into space. It is the first such approval by the FAA and follows a successful test flight by Virgin Galactic in May.

 

  • Netflix shares increased 2% after the company was upgraded at Credit Suisse, which said it expects subscriber growth to normalize and that its recent consumer survey reinforced Netflix’s strong competitive position.

 

  • BlackBerry reported a smaller-than-expected loss for its latest quarter. The company also beat revenue expectations, as a jump in electric vehicle sales boosted demand for BlackBerry’s QNX software.
