With summer firmly in view and an economy still recovering from the drama of the COVID-19 pandemic, you may want to be more cautious with your spending, including your summer plans. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a lot of fun over the summer! Here are 15 fun and free activities you can do this summer without a lot of expense.

1. Take a hike

Many areas nearby make for beautiful hiking, which cost nothing but packing time and gas to go further afield.

2. Host an at-home movie night

Get everyone comfortable, come up with some popcorn and snacks, then watch an old favorite.

3. Plan a picnic lunch

There are many beautiful parks, so simply putting your meal together and bringing it along makes this a great form of recreation on a budget.

4. Discover free museums

Some museums offer free admittance at particular points of the year, while others are free year-round.

5. Go for a ride

Save gas and try some recreation on a budget in the form of a bike ride instead. There are plenty of amazing areas that give you easy or challenging trails.

6. DIY a project from found objects

If you’re tired of that old coffee table, grab some leftover paint, metal leaf, fabric, or other items to revamp it.

7. Get sporty with some friends

Set up a net in the backyard for badminton or volleyball and invite friends over for a game.

8. Do good in the community

Working with a volunteer group in the area helps improve the community and makes you feel great.

9. Camp out at home

Drag out your tents, sleeping bags, and other camping gear and enjoy creating a camp in your backyard.

10. Set up a scavenger hunt

Consider adding tasks that build relationships, such as finding a veteran or someone over 70.

11. Try geocaching

Most phones have basic GPS capability, so look up a geocaching site and discover some local spots to check.

12. Drive out for some stargazing

The desert sky is fabulous but avoid the week before or after the full moon for the best viewing.

13. Join or start a book club

Try classics that are freely available through Project Gutenberg to keep the club genuinely free.

14. Arrange a game night

Dust off your old board games, set up some snacks, and schedule time on the calendar with your friends or family. You could even look for a local meetup event to meet new friends who like the same games as you.

15. Enjoy a fancy meal — at home

Look up recipes for cuisine that you love, then take the time to learn the techniques.

By taking some of these affordable summer activities into action, you can enjoy a lot of fun times this summer without spending your way into oblivion.
