The Dow Jones recovered from a decline of more than 800 points for a second day in a row, an unusual burst of instability that comes as the Federal Reserve is preparing investors for tighter monetary policy.

 

Dow Jones finished -67 at 34,297

S&P 500 finished -54 at 4,356

NASDAQ finished -316 at 13,539

 

The 10 Year Treasury closed up 5 basis points yielding 1.78%

Oil prices closed up $2.06 ending at $85.37 a barrel.

Gold prices closed up $6.50 ending at $1,848 an ounce.

 

In the days’ stock news:

 

  • General Electric closed down 6% after the company missed revenue estimates for the fiscal fourth quarter. The conglomerate reported 92 cents in adjusted earnings per share on $20.3 billion in revenue.
  • American Express closed up more than 8% after they beat estimates on the top and bottom lines for the fourth quarter. The payments company earned $2.18 per share on $12.15 billion in revenue.
