I’m not a huge basketball fan, but I was fortunate to be watching an interview with Monty Williams, the coach of the Phoenix Suns, after one of their playoff games. Most interviews are pretty predictable because the questions asked are nothing out of the ordinary. But in this instance, one of the questions produced an answer that was not only sincere but got to the heart of Williams’ coaching style.
They asked him “why the team had such charisma and cohesiveness;
how have you been able to change the culture?” Williams responded that his style and approach was to “ not call people out, but to call people UP.” How refreshing, in a sport that emphasizes victory at all costs and will trade a player should somebody better come along. Williams understands that there’s more to basketball than winning; he wants to develop their character so that they win in the game of LIFE.
What are the parallels in the financial services industry? When you reach retirement, it’s natural for you to look back on your career and count all the missteps, failures, and regrets. You’re basically calling yourself OUT! How does that benefit anybody? I like to call people UP, having them view retirement from a different perspective. You have so much more to live, and give, so let’s make the most of it. We want to become your biggest cheerleader, as there’s nothing more rewarding than crossing the finish line together!
